SAN JOSE – A man killed in a traffic collision over the weekend near the Municipal Rose Garden has been identified as 46-year-old San Jose resident David Dunbar, according to the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.

The crash was reported about 3:20 a.m. Saturday near Burrell Court and West Hedding Street. In a statement released the same day, the San Jose Police Department said a preliminary investigation revealed the man was driving a 2005 Infiniti SUV westbound on West Hedding when he veered off the roadway and hit a tree.

The man suffered major injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation, but Sgt. Christian Camarillo said in an email Wednesday that it appeared the man was traveling at a high rate of speed prior to the crash.

The death marked the 41st fatal collision and 43rd traffic fatality of the year on city streets. San Jose, the 10th largest city in the country, is on pace to surpass last year’s traffic death total of 60, which was a 25-year peak also reached in 2015 and 2019.

Anyone with information related to the case can contact Detective Keith Aldinger at 408-277-4654 or [email protected].
